After running the NYC Half Marathon in 2011 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, I joined Society Ties - the young professionals committee of the organization. Within the following year, I became chairwoman of the committee and helped raise nearly half a million dollars to fund groundbreaking research and support patients and caregivers living with blood cancers.
In this video, I’m being a spokesperson for the Light the Night fundraising campaign and sharing my story about why I walk with the Society Ties team.
In 2012 I was nominated to run for the Woman of the Year campaign, a fundraising effort where a handful of men and handful of women compete to raise as much money as possible in a 10-week spirited fundraising campaign. The man and woman who raise the most are named the Man and Woman of the Year.
For my campaign, I branded our platform “Because Everyone Has a Dad” to make the campaign relevant to even those who may not have been touched by cancer. Because everyone can understand the weight a father/child connection bears, the idea was that people would be more inclined to support - be it with dollars, in-kind donations, or high-fives - the campaign.
Society Ties is the young professionals committee of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in New York City. From 2012 - 2016 I served as Chairwoman of the organization leading monthly meetings, planning volunteer opportunities around NYC, establishing new fundraising events and concepts, and chairing our annual gala - Black Tie Black Jack.
